The HMS Anson was a large ship, 1870 tons, built at Paull, near Hull, England in 1812. Sailed to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia from Plymouth, England on 1 Oct 1843, arriving 4 Feb 1844 carrying 499 male convicts, plus a crew of 326 - the greatest number to ever leave England on a transport ship. The 'Anson' was then refitted as a hulk Probation Station for housing female prisoners after they first arrived in Van Diemen's Land. It was situated in the River Derwent, Prince of Wales Bay, Risdon near Hobart. There is much written about it's time as a Probation Station. The 'Anson' ship was broken up in 1850.

Reference Number: t18421024-2943 Offence: Theft > simple larceny Verdict: Guilty > no_subcategory Punishment: Transportation JOSEPH WORHALL was indicted for stealing, on the 7th of October, 1 copying-machine, value 2l. 10s., the goods of George Watson. MARY ANN WATSON . I am the wife of George Watson, of Portugal-street, Lincoln's-inn Fields. On the 7th of October, after six o'clock in the evening, I saw the prisoner, or some person very much like him, come into the shop and take the copying-machine now produced away. FRANCIS SNELLING . I am ostler at the Grange public-house. On the evening of the 7th of October I met the prisoner running down Carey. street—he dropped this machine. WILLIAM DAVIS (police-sergeant S 15.) I produce a certificate of the prisoner's former conviction, which I got from Mr. Clark's office—(read) the prisoner is the person. GUILTY . Aged 20.— Transported for Seven Years. Joseph was recorded as being 24 years old on arrival in VDL. Founders and Survivors have him as ‘stealing a coffee machine’. Joseph was 5’ 1 ½” tall, could read and write, florid complexion, light brown hair and whiskers, light blue eyes, tattoos, married. Wife: Susannah at Newport Market. Mother: Mary at Long Acre Sisters: Mary, Jemima, Ruth ~ at London. 4/8/1845: Released from 1st stage of Probation. 20/11/1847: TOL 22/10/1849: Certificate. 12/5/1852: Married Hannah Lynch at the Independent Chapel, Brisbane St., Hobart.
