Convict Notes




Michael arrived in Australia after being convicted at Bedford Assizes on 9 March 1820. Stated on the Newcastle Entrance Books in 1832 that he was a native of Cambridge; Religion - Protestant; Trade - Labourer; Height 5ft 31/2 inches; Sallow Complexion; Dark Brown; Blue eyes and slender make. He was tried at Maitland on 17 May 1832 for having stolen pigs in his passion knowing them to be stolen. Found guilty and sentenced to two years transportation. Transported to Sydney and then to Morton Bay on 11 August 1832. NSW Phoenix Hulk Weekly Transportation Records in 1832. In 1822 and 1825 Census was working in Newcastle. Married Bridget Kennedy in 1825 at Hoxham, Newcastle NSW. Approved sought from his excellency Governor Thomas Brisbane. Approved 21 December 1824. Bridget Kennedy was transported on Almorah (3) in 1824 from Ireland. There had at least two children - Ann in 1825 and Vicars in 1827. Received a ticket of exemption in 1830 and 1831. Part of these conditions was that he was in the care of his wife Bridget. On his conviction in 1832 these tickets of exemption were cancelled. Received a ticket of leave passport in 1840 on the recommendation of the Parramatta Bench and he was allowed to remain in Queanbeyan District.




Buried The Oaks (Queanbeyan now Oaks Estate, ACT) on 27 August 1845 service conducted by Rev. Edward Smith. Age 48 or 49. Occupation in Church records as Tenant at Burra (near Queanbeyan)
