Child: male child born 30 Oct 1847 at Hobart. Father - John Perith DE-CASTONAS, clerk. Mother - Bedelia RICHARDSON, Liverpool St. Hobart. (ref. 33/1/3 no. 361) Bedelia BOURKE had a female child, 5 May 1843. Father named as Henry John RICHARDSON, solicitor. (This explains why two different surnames are recorded for her.) Govt Gazette 1 Nov 1839 confirms his appointment as a Constable at the Tasman Peninsula. Advertisement in the Colonial Times of 15 Jan 1847: January 12, 1847. FRENCH, ITALIAN, & SPANISH LANGUAGES, And Spanish Guitar SEÑOR DE CASTAÑOS begs to acquaint his friends and the public, that he continues his Lessons in the above branches of Education, and that he has at present several hours disengaged, which he will be happy to dedicate to the instruction of those persons who may favor him with their patronage Apply to this Office, or at Senor De Castaños' residence, 62 Macquarie-Street. Masters and Mistresses of Public Academies, who may require Senor De C's services in any of the above branches, will be attended to.

John Perez DE CASTANOS was convicted at the CCC London on 24 Oct 1836 for stealing gold seals and rings. Co-offender was Piedro Calligana, an Italian friend. Both found guilty and transported to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania, Australia) per the ship 'Sarah'. Hulk Report:"bad. ironed for insolence". Ship Surgeon's Report: "ironed onboard for mutiny". Aged 28 yrs; married man, 2 chldren - wife Eliza at Carthagena. Trade - labourer. 5'6 1/4" height; fresh complexion; black hair; black eyes. Native place of birth given as Carthagena. Upon arrival in Van Diemen's Land, he was sent immediately to Port Arthur Penal Settlement, due to his involvement as a ring leader with the mutiny on the ship 'Sarah'. His Conduct Record is clear with no further accounts of misconduct being recorded. 20 May 1842: Ticket of Leave granted (which permitted some freedoms and required him to be of good behaviour) In 1843 was was assignment as a Constable, however disobeyed orders and was insolent. Fined. In 1843 he was recommended for a Conditional Pardon. This was approved 14 Jan 1845. Extended 24 Jan 1847. MARRIAGE (in VDL - note remarriages were permitted, if approved by the Govt) 23 March 1844: John Perez DE-CASTANOS, male, aged 37yrs, widower, teacher of languages to Bedelia RICHARDSON, female, aged 26 yrs, widow, at the home of Mr. Hills, 57 Argyle St. Hobart Town according to the rights of the Baptist faith, by William R.Wade, Minister. (ref. 37/1/3 no. 1128) Note: his friend, Piedro Calligano was a teacher of languages and may have arranged for John to get into this profession as his original trade was a labourer. Children: Alfred Perez DE CASTANOS born 19 Oct 1844 at Hobart, VDL. Father - John DE CASTANOS, teacher of languages. Mother - Bedelia DE CASTANOS (formerly BOURKE). Informant for registration - Robert Collins of the New Wharf, friend of family. (ref. 33/1/2 no. 588) Note: on the marriage cert of mother her name was stated as "Richardson" so the friend may have given incorrect information or as she was a widow, perhaps her former name) 9 Feb 1846: Eliza DE CASTANO born at Hobart. Father - John DE CASTANO, mother - Bedelia BOURKE. (ref. 33/1/2 no. 1500) DEPARTURE FROM THE COLONY: 15 May 1847 - J.P. De Castanos left on the ship "Mary Hay" from Launceston, VDL bound for Cape of Good Hope. Recorded as having arrived on the ship "Sarah". (ref: POL 459/1/2 pg 102). No details online if any family accompanied him. VDL CENSUS: 1848: John P CASTANOS living in Hobart. (ref: 1/1/85 pg 81). ?did he return to Tasmania.
