Sugar Cane, was a 403 burthen ton merchantman and convict ship that was dispatched in 1793 from Ireland to Australia. She was launched in 1786 upon the Thames River. Under the command of Thomas Musgrave, she sailed from Cork, Ireland, on 12 April 1793, with 110 male and 50 female convicts. During the voyage a mutiny by the convicts was put down and a convict executed. She arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales on the 17 September 1793. The Sugar Cane left Port Jackson for Bengal in late 1793.

Family connectionsfor Ann (Grant) are: GRANT Ann (Grant) was born about 1770 She arrived in NSW as a convict on 17 9 1793 after a voyage of 5or17months on SUGAR CANE. She was Free by Servitude by 1798 & living with her first? relationship Jno (Inch his first relationship) & produced perhaps 3children.>>> [Some details taken from this Website] Joseph (Ince/Inch) was born on 14 2 1773 at Stepney Middlesex. He was tried at probably Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 5.5months on Fleet ship SURPRISE; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. She died on 24 10 1809 (childbirth?) mother of perhaps 4children & was buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney Burial ground. John (Smith) was born in Scotland. He enlisted in NSW Corps in UK on 16 10 1789 as a private & arrived in NSW as a soldier on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. He became Corporal in 1794 & was granted 25 acres at Iron Cove creek. In 1795 he was granted 25acres at Hawkesbury River. In 1798 he was detached to (McArthur)s company. In 1799 he was granted 150acres at Toongabbie & leased 1acre at ?Creek near Parramatta. In 1801 he was relegated to private. In 1801 he was stationed at Parramatta & was granted 100acres at Mulgrave Place Hawkesbury. In 1805 he was detached to (Savory)s company until 1809 when he was transferred to 4company & granted 30acres at Evan & 100acres at Port Dalrymple Tasmania. On 24 4 1810 he was transferred to Veterans company. Ann (Grant) & John (Smith) produced 1child: 1.Elizabeth (Smith) was born before 1810. an Ann (Grant SUGAR CANE 1793) is also shown in Smees records as marrying Donald (Kennedy ROYAL ADMIRAL 1792) & producing 12children in period 1794-1815-this may be an error.
