(All data from NSW Archives record 4/2244.1) 17 December 1834: Major Anderson wrote to the Colonial Secretary's office, Sydney, that Grant was being returned to Sydney. On 27 October 1834, a bench trial had taken place at Norfolk Island regarding Grant. At some point prior to this date, Grant's colonial sentence had expired, and Grant had decided that he was then free and could not be compelled to work. The bench trial recognised that Grant was still a prisoner under original sentence, and sentenced him to be worked in double irons for 6 months on public works or roads. Anderson noted that Grant had subsequently had frequent, though not as determined, instances of his spirit of disobedience. The Colonial Secretary's office ordered him to be placed in the Carters Barracks gang with instructions to the superintendent to look well after him.
