Family connections for William (Herbert) may be: HERBERT Recordings in the Reference material are confusing: William (Herbert) was born about 1784. He was tried (as John (Herbert)) for entering, on 25 6 1816, & robbing Wiltshire-Berkshire canal Lockhouse/house of John (Brown) Pewsham Forest-maybe 2crimes-at Salisbury Wiltshire Assizes on 27 7 1816, sentenced to death reprieved to Life, held at New Sarum & hulks & arrived in NSW on 24 4 1817 after a voyage of 4months on SHIPLEY.>>> [Some details taken from this Website] >>>Noted, in Smees records, a William (Herbert) is recorded as marrying an Ann (Durant) in 1817 at St Johns CofE Parraatta-not shown in Smees records, but children are shown as born to married parents. He is variously described as arriving on MORLEY 1817 (not found) & SHIPLEY 1817 age33 & unknown. She is described as arriving on CANADA 1817.>>> Ann (Durant) arrived in NSW as a convict on 6 8 1817 after a voyage of 4.5months on CANADA. W. Herbert and John Sly , for breaking open and robbing the Wilts and Berks Canal Lockhouse; Bath Chronicle, 8 Aug 1816 In the Hampshire Chronicle newspaper his name seems to have been mistakenly reported as John: Wiltshire Assizes. Monday, the Assizes commenced at Salisbury, ….John Herbert and John Sly were found guilty of a burglary in the house of John Brown, in Pewsham Forest, on the 25th of June last. Death. Hampshire Chronicle, 5 Aug 1816 Prison Hulk record, HO 9-8-4 p. 34. Received from New Sarum, 9 Oct 1816 (6 prisoners) William Herbert, age 27, convicted at New Sarum, 27 July 1816 of a felony, sentenced to transportation for life. NSW, 3 Dec 1816.
