Family connections for Susannah (Hunt) are: HUNT Susannah (???) was born about 1749. She married firstly John (Hunt). She was tried for stealing 8yards muslin of William (Notcutt) at Ipswich Suffolk on 17 3 1789, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 3 6 1790 after a voyage of 12months on Fleet ship LADY JULIANA-a ship with 228females who easily entertained the whole crew & also sailors at Teneriffe stopover. She was sent to Norfolk Island on SURPRISE on 7 8 1790. She married secondly Wiliam (Mitchell) on 5 11 1791 or on 17 3 1790 on Norfolk Island (not shown in Smees records or records of group ceremenoy (1791) on Norfolk Island. She was appointed teacher of a small class of girls by Governor (King) in 1793/4 at the orphanage; she was also supported by the Society for Propagation of the Gospel. She became mistress of the orphanage about 1796, but was not well regarded in 1800-she was mentioned by the Governor as having behaved ill, but cannot be replaced as the other teacher was in gaol for debt. She is recorded as sentence expired off stores in February 1805 on Norfolk Island. She was complained of in her teaching job in 1806. She left Norfolk Island w/husband & 3children as part of the first evacuation on 26 12 1807 on HMS PORPOISE to Derwent Tasmania, arriving on 17 1 1808: to New Town Argyle. She moved with her husband to Macquarie St Hobart about 1823, allowing Robert (Blinkworth) to farm their property. She was an emancipist when she died on 28 11 1814 age66 & was buried. as (Mitchell nee Hunt), at St Davids CofE Hobart. [This Webste shows she died on 26 12 1814 age about65 & was buried at St Davids CofE Hobart]>>> [Some details taken from this Website] >>>Susannah (???/Hunt) was the only prisoner awaiting orders for transportation at Ipswich Gaol when "the court appointed 2Justices of the Peace to select a person to convey her from the gaol keeper at Ipswich & place her on the ship LADY JULIANA & for her to be landed at Botany Bay." "She was received on board LADY JULIANA, hired Transport from the Keeper of His Majesties Gaol for the County of Suffolk-the bodies(sic) of one female prisoner under sentence of transportation that are to be victualled, clothed regulated as re instructions sent." "The agent was to be paid 40lb from the Town Clerk, with the understanding that, should she return to Great Britain or Ireland before her sentence expired, part of the payment would be forfeited by the agent" William (Mitchell) was born about 1754/9, possibly in Fort George Scotland. He arrived in NSW in January 1788 as botswains mate/quarter master of First Fleet ship HMS SIRIUS. He continued on to Norfolk Island on HMS SIRIUS arriving on 7 8 1790sic. HMS SIRIUS became wrecked on reef near Kingston Pier Slaughter Bay & he chose to stay as a settler. In 1791 he was granted 60acres plot no.46 Great Cascade Stream near Phillipsburg on east side of the island which he partly cleared while working as a constable. In 1794 he was appointed head of the Orphan School where his wife worked. In 1802 he procured another adjacent 60acres plot no45 from William (Hambley) & later sold it piecemeal. He is recorded in February 1805 with his wife & no children as settler/landowner on 108acres with 2storey shingled house a mill house & 2outhouses. He left Norfolk Island w/wife & 3children on 26 12 1807 as part of the first evacuation (for which volunteers apparantly had been called with appropriate compensation offerred & for which he may have tried to decline as some successful farmers were asked to stay) on HMS PORPOISE to Derwent Tasmania, arriving on 17 1 1808; he was granted 103acres at New Town Argyle. It is possible that he was the William (Mitchell) who was nearly drowned in a tragic accident on River Derwent on 15 4 1808. He moved with his wife to Macquarie St Hobart about 1823 as an invalid, allowing his foster son in law Robert (Blinkworth) to operate his farm. At some point he is said to have mortgaged his Macquarie St house to Mr Richard (Brownlow), who had been a lodger, to relieve a debt owed by his foster son in law George (Robley) to (Brownlow) & a caveat placed on the mortgage entrusting the property to Robert Lathrop (Murray) as trustee for his adopted daughter Ann (Robley)-such was the generosity of William (Mitchell) who died a poor man. He died on 13 6 1827 age73 & was buried at St Davids CofE Hobart cemetery.>>> [In 1836 a claim was made by Robert Lathrop (Murray) for grant of the Macquarie St house, which was upheld against a claim by Mr Richard (Brownlow)-with the requirement that he take care of Ann (Robley) who was living in wretched circumstances.] >>>William (Mitchell) was described as "a man whose whole attention seemed occupied in promoting the real interest of those he had the honor to command'. With Thomas Macqueen the other initial teacher on Norfolk Island was Sussanna Hunt, transported aboard the Lady Juliana in the Second Fleet. She was sent to Norfolk Island in August 1790. She was appointed by Lieutenant Governor King to teach the girls on Norfolk Island and like Macqueen, was also supported by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel at a remuneration of 10 pounds a year. According to Flynn she lived with Norfolk settler and First Fleet seaman William Mitchell, who was later appointed as overseer of the Orphan School on the Island. In December 1807 Hunt, Mitchell and three adopted children sailed to Van Diemen’s Land where they took up farming at New Town. Sussanna Hunt died in 1814 and is buried in St. David’s Cemetery Hobart.
