Jacob Skerry was a member of a travelling gypsy family and is described as a "travelling tinker" in newspaper reports. He was involved in several brushes with the law. In April 1846, he gave evidence about a murder which had happened several years earlier, and resulted in two of his fellow "tinkers" being found guilty. At his trial for sheep stealing (in July 1846) he pleaded Not Guilty and claimed that evidence given against him by the sister of one of the men he had given evidence against ( a woman who had been cohabiting with Jacob for several years) was false and done out of spite. From the reports of his unruly behaviour prior to this, it seems that he was a rogue.
