James Merrett was listed as 21 years old on arrival in VDL. Place of Birth: Dursley, Gloster. James was single, 5'5" tall, fair complexion, light brown hair, grey eyes, Pockmark on rt cheek Sail or ins rt. arm Ring pricked ring finr. & thumb. Father: Thomas Mother: Elizabeth Webb (From death registration VIC BDM). 1835 Muster: Public Works. No registration found - Alison was already married in Scotland. 22/5/1860 The Argus, Melbourne: THE Friends of the late Mr. JAMES MERRETT, of the Prince Albert Hotel, Prahran, are respectfully invited to follow his remains to the place of interment, Melbourne General Cemtery. The funeral procession to leave his late residence, Balaclava-road, at a quarter past 1 this day, (Tuesday); will pass the Prince Albert Hotel at 2 o'clock, and pass Princes's Bridge at 3 o'clock. Sentenced in Surry General Quarter Session, KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES, on 15th. October, 1833, by Sir Henry Fletcher, for stealing 'two bushels measure of bones' (value 4s8d) and 'thirty six feet measure of lead pipe' (value 4 pds) - Surrey Public Record Office (viewed Dec 1998): File of Indictments: QS2/7/1883 Two separate indictments: 10th and 11th of Oct, file ref no.s 446 & 447. Only tried on first charge, sentenced to 7 years. Transported to Australia on "Arab 2", arrived June 30, 1834. Free certificate no 687/1840.
