On Wednesday last the following convicts were removed from Springfield Gaol to the York hulk, lying off Gosport, prior to undergoing their respective sentences :—To be Transported for Life— … Thos. Judd, for robbing Joseph Brown, on the highway, at Sheering; Jas. Sorrell, for similar offence upon Newman Moore, at Hempsted ;... Chelmsford Chronicle, 9 May 1834.

ORDER FOR REMOVAL OF JAMES SORRELL County of Lancaster Upon the complaint of the Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Township of Toxteth Park in the said County of Lancaster, this day, made unto us whose names are hereunto set and Seals affixed, being two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Lancaster, and one of us the quorum that James son of William and Margaret Sorrell aged eight years is come to inhabit the said Township of Toxteth Park aforesaid not having gained any legal settlement there; and that the said James Sorrell is actually chargeable to the said Township of Toxteth Park aforesaid. We the said Justices, upon due proof made thereof, as well upon the examination of the said William Sorrell upon oath, as otherwise; and likewise upon due consideration had of the Premises, do adjudge the same to be true: And we do likewise adjudge that the lawful Settlement of him the said James Sorrell Is in the Parish of Hempstead in the County of Essex We do therefore require you the said Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Township of Toxteth Park or some or one of you, to remove and convey the said James Sorrell from and out of your said Township of Toxteth Park to the said Parish of Hempstead and deliver to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor there, or some or one of them; together with this our order, or a true copy thereof, at the same time shewing them the original. AND we do also hereby require you the said Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Hempstead to receive and provide for him As an inhabitant of your Parish. During his early life and at the time, living in Saffron-Walden in Essex, he ran foul of the law and was convicted and imprisoned eight times for poaching.

Tasmanian Archives records: Convict no. 66615. Tried at Essex 03/03/1834 for Highway Robbery - acquitted, but guilty on lesser charge of Assault & Robbery. Tried with Thomas Moise & John Porter or Parker - both acquitted. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemens Land on the 'Augusta Jessie', arriving 22 Jan 1835. Age 20yrs; born abt 1810 Liverpool. Married, wife Mary, 1 child at Hampstead, Essex. Ploughman; 5'9 1/4"; ring on right hand; tatoos; fresh complexion; lt red hair; grey eyes; brown eyebrows; oval visage; retreating high forehead; round head; large chin; med long nose. Several notes of misconduct and punishments on Conduct Record. Assigned to Domain (Hobart) Quarry Gang. Noted as a bad character by Lt. Gov. In 1837 he was a Constable, but after misconduct recommended he be dismissed. Later assignments at Launceston and Westbury (north of colony). Ticket of Leave 24/03/1843. Recommended for Conditional Pardon 11/08/1846 - granted 05/10/1847. Application for permission to marry Jean McDougall 11/1843. No decision recorded, so presume it did not proceed. Application for permission to marry convict Mary King (per Emma Eugenia) 12/1845. Approved. Mary's proper name was Charlotte Pamphillon. Married at St. George's Church, Hobart 29/12/1845.
