The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) View title info Wed 2 Jul 1851 Page 3 NEWS FROM THE INTERIOR. On Thurs- day, the 2Gth. an inquest was held on the body of Bridget Green, who was lying dead at Mr. Mulvey's, Donnybrook Inn. By the evidence of John Green (husband of deceased), Samuel Divalle, and Matthew Flood, a boy of nine years of age, whose statement only was taken, Captain Sutherland not administering the oath to him, it appeared that on the Monday previous, Green, the husband, was proceeding with,, a loaded dray in the direction of Evans's Plains, the deceased being on the dray at the time. She had been drinking, but the witnesses varied as to whether she was drunk at the time. Green had beat her with a whip several times on the road, and just previous to the accident happening had told her to get off the dray, the road being rough, but she refused ¡ upon which lie told her to hold fast by the' rope. On arriving near the bottom of Cherry-tree Hill, Green being alongside the leading bullocks at the time, deceased fell over the front of the dray on the off side, and the wheel crushed against her side and went over her shoulder before the bullocks could be stopped. She died immediately. Green appeared to feel much sorrow for the accident, and camped at the spot, telling the witness Divalle to inform Dr. Machattie as soon as he got into Bathurst, which he neglected to do, although it appeared Green gave him half-a-crown. Dr. Busby, who made an external examination of the body, stated l have this day examined the body of a woman said to be named Bridget Green ; I found the left arm and shoulder much bruised, and bruises extending across the back towards the right shoulder ; I found also several of the ribs fractured near the spine, .by which the contents of the chest must have been severely injured and lacerated ; I think it probable that the effusion, of blood into the lungs, which would be the consequence of the severe injuries sustained; . would cause death by suffocation, much blood-having evidently flowed from her mouth. The Jury returned a verdict of "accidentally killed from injuries inflicted by the wheel of a dray'." The boy Flood, upon being questioned by Captain Sutherland, to ascertain whether he knew the nature of an oath, stated, that he did not know there was either a God or a place of punishment, and that he had never been taught cither at a school or at home. The worthy Coroner strongly animadverted upon the wickedness of parents and guardians allowing a child to arrive at his age without instilling : into his mind even the slightest principles of religion, and read the witness Green a very severe lecture on the brutality of the course he had pursued in flogging the deceased with his bullock whip.
