John James was first tried for wounding Henry Sharpe. The wounding happened in the scuffle when John James was caught having broken into a coach house to steal. He was found not guilty of wounding (surgeon's evidence that the wound had made a full recovery probably helped). Simple larceny was a lesser charge for which John James was convicted, but all the offence details are in the report for the wounding case.
