Two voyages with transport convicts to Australia: 1845/1846: 1847: 248 male people (known as "exiles" landed at Point Henry, Geelong, Victoria and 1 went on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Queen Victoria had decreed that all of these men (many of them youths from Parkhurst, Isle of Wight) should be treated as "free" upon arrival (significant backlash to transported criminals at this time).

John PROTHERO was convicted at Monmouth on 31 July 1845 for housebreaking. Previous convictions. 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Joseph Somes' arriving 21 May 1846. Single man; lime burner; aged 29yrs; 5'4"; Protestant; can read a little. Native Place: Radnorshire, Wales. Father: William Mother: Jane Brothers: James & Thomas Sister: 12mths Probation Period in Colony of VDL. 13 Nov 1849: Ticket of Leave granted. 19 Oct 1852: Certificate of Freedom 28 July 1857: charged at Hobart Supreme Court for burglary. Acquitted.
