John Silcock was listed as 27 years old on arrival. 1/12/1830: Charged with breaking a machine owned by Thomas Dowden at Northingham and with others causing a riot on 19th November 1830. John was 5'4¼" tall, dark complexion, dark brown hair, brown whiskers, hazel eyes, 4 moles in a bunch on right arm, several moles on left arm, single. Children with Bridget O’Shaughnessy: 1841: Mary, born Merri Creek, Victoria. 1843: John, born Yarrabin, Vic. 1846: Lucy, born Merri Creek Vic. 1849: Patrick Charles born Yabba, Vic. 1852: Sarah 16/11/1888: John Silcock died at Foley Street, Kew, Vic., of Bronchitis, heart disease and old age. Wife Bridget died 1877 at Kew, Vic.
Born in Bullington, Hampshire, England. Son of Joseph Silcock and wife Lucy Diddams.
Assigned to Captain Watson, Swanport, Tasmania. Granted Certificate of Freedom [No 249] in 1836 Travelled to Melbourne on 2 November 1838 from Launceston on vessel 'Aquila'.[Colonial Times, Tue 13 Nov 1838, page 4 and Launceston Advertiser supplement Thu 8 Nov 1838}] Married Bridget O'Shaughnessy (an assisted immigrant who arrived in Melbourne from Ireland with 2 brothers in 1840) in Melbourne 6 July 1841. [Reg No 1035 Vol 91] Worked as a farmer in Preston, bought a property at Little River near Geelong. Sold this property in 1876 and travelled to the Latrobe Valley by wagon with his family and bought land at Hazelwood near Morwell in Gippsland. He died in Kew and is buried in the Boorondarra Cemetery in Kew. He did not write, signing both his marriage registration and his will with an X. He is buried with surname Sillcock but alternate spelling of Silcock was carried on in some parts of the family.
