JOHN WILLIAMS per the PALMYRA “Proper Name Wm Johnson” TRIED Lancaster, Liverpool, 15 Dec 1845. 10 years xxx 7 july 1853 Embarked 18 April 1846, Arrived 23 August 1846 CRIME: Stealing wearing apparel from a vessel. Gaol Report: Second Conviction Single man. Roman Catholic. Can read a little. A Sailor 5ft 4inches, 21 years old. Fresh complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, dark brown eyebrows. Also an oval shaped head, long nose, no whiskers.Slightly pockpitted. States this offence: Stealing wearing apparel from a ship in the Liverpool Dock. Previous offences: For clothes 5 months. For cloth 4 months 3 months for clothes, V [vagrancy?] 2 months A watch 1 month. Vagrancy 1 month **************************************** During the first and second year while under sentence, he made hard work of it, Five months after arriving - 6 January 1847 - Illegally at large until apprehended. Punished with Ten days Solitary confinement. 23 January 1847 Misconduct in cutting out the number of a fellow prisoner’s trousers. Punished with imprisonment with hard labour Same Date - Assaulting a fellow prisoner AND misconduct in telling the Superintendant a falsehood - 20 days’ solitary confinement 14 Feb 1847 -improperly having a handkerchief in. his possession – 2 months; hard labour 30 June 1847 being found un the same sleeping berth as another rman under suspicious circumstances. Xxx and hard labour, to be kept strictly separate and cow’d spc’lly and report on 4 weeks ? of expiry date of sentence 3 July 48? Neglect of duty 10 July 47? Misconduct in xx Fourteen days solitary. 16 Feb 1848 – Disobedience of orders. Reprimanded 10 April 1848 – fighting? Two days solitary and hard labor His sentence was finished her but on 25 Sept 1865 – assaulting a female: hard labour.
