Convict Notes
Gloucester Lent Assizes. Bristol Rioters. – on Saturday, Joseph Mills, William Spokes, and Henry Hurd , were indicted with beginning to demolishing the house of John Mack, publican, St Philip and Jacob, Bristol, on the memorable Sunday, the 30th October. The prisoner Hurd pleaded guilty. The case was one of the most flagitious enormity. The mob violently assaulted the inmates with iron bars; smashed in the windows; broke into the cellar and drank the beer; took away the letter box (the house was a post office for the district), and cutting the gas pipes attached to the premises, endeavoured to set the house on fire! The Jury found Mills and Spokes Guilty- Mr Justice Taunton said, he should take the case into further consideration before passing sentence on the prisoners; and his Lordship ordered a reward of 10£ each to be paid to Mrs Mack and her brother for their intrepidity in defending the house.
