Absconded. Cavanagh Lawrence, or Kavenagh, No. 29-659, Fergusson, 21, Carter, Wicklow, 6 feet 7½, blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy freckled comp. flat nose, wants right little finger, small scar on back of left hand, and on centre of forehead, from No. 4 Road gang. NSW Govt Gazette, 17 Oct 1832.




Dublin. At the Commission Court on Monday last, Laurence Kavanagh, Catherine Kavanagh, and James Cannon, were indicted for burglariously breaking into the house of the Rev. Geo. Strong, on the 17th of July last, and taking therefrom several articles of wearing apparel and found guilty. Limerick Chronicle, 30 Aug 1828. Close of the Commission. … returned at half-past two o’clock, and the following sentences were pronounced: … Laurence Kavanagh, James Cannon, and Catherine Kavanagh—Sentence of death recorded. The female prisoner, on the sentence being announced, poured forth the bitterest imprecations against her first seducer. She mentioned the name of the person, but we are not disposed to give publicity to any charge coming from such a tainted source. … Saunder’s News-Letter, 28 Aug 1828

Lawrence KAVANAGH was convicted at Dublin, Ireland on 14 Aug 1828 for burglary. Life sentence. Transported to New South Wales, Australia per the ship "Fergusson". Native place of birth: Waterford, Ireland (ref. convict record) Colony of NSW: 1833: Insolence. Sent to Norfolk Island (off the east coast of NSW), 14 yrs. Spent 9 yrs there. 12 April 1842: Attempted murder - shooting at Capts Hunter & Dobbie. Committed to trial at Sydney, NSW. Life sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the "Marian Watson" 1842. 1842 convict record: Aged 30yrs; stonemason; 5'10 1/2" height; pale complexion; brown to grey hair; lt grey eyes; Roman Catholic; not literate; single man. Stated his mother Sarah was now in NSW. Brothers: Martin, Andrew & Bryan at Dublin. Native place of birth: Wicklow, Ireland 7 Sept 1843: Hobart Supreme Court - felony. Death, commuted to Life sentence. To be sent, again, to Norfolk Island. Note: "Kavanagh, with good conduct, may look forward to my recommendation to have his period shortened, henious as his offences have been, but at present it is quite out of the question my doing so. 1845 12 Oct 1846: Executed, at Norfolk Island.
