George Kelly was transported on the Sugar Cane, departing 12th Apr 1792 and arriving 17th Sep 1793 with 102 passengers.
Sugar Cane, was a 403 burthen ton merchantman and convict ship that was dispatched in 1793 from Ireland to Australia. She was launched in 1786 upon the Thames River. Under the command of Thomas Musgrave, she sailed from Cork, Ireland, on 12 April 1793, with 110 male and 50 female convicts. During the voyage a mutiny by the convicts was put down and a convict executed. She arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales on the 17 September 1793. The Sugar Cane left Port Jackson for Bengal in late 1793.

Family connections for Matthew George (Kelly) are: KELLY Matthew/George/Thomas (Kelly) was born about 1771. He was tried for assault & attempted robbery at Dublin Ireland in 1792, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW on 17 9 1793 after a voyage of of 5/17months on SUGAR CANE. He is recorded in 1806 as Free by Servitude lessee of 3acres. He may have married firstly Jane (Thomas) her second marriage about 1809 (not shown in Smees records).>>> [Some details taken from this Website; & also the entry for George (Kelly) 1793 SUGAR CANE who is suspected as being the same person ] Jane (Thomas) arrived in NSW as a convict-perhaps on 27 5 1797 after a voyage of 5.5months on BRITANNIA. She seems to have had a first relationship with John (Wexford) & produced a child. She was Free by Servitude by 1812. She seems to have produced 4children in her lifetime. Jane (Thomas) does not have an entry on this Website as yet-added by me] Matthew George (Kelly) & Jane (Thomas) produced perhaps 3children: 1.George (Kelly) was born about 1809-not shown in Smees records. 2.James (Kelly) was born about 1811-not shown in Smees records. 3.William (Kelly) was born in 1812. .. >>>Matthew George (Kelly) had a second relationship with Eleanor (Sullivan). He was appointed constable in Sydney on 13 11 1813. Evidence of him being a constable in Sydney between 14 9 1813 & 30 8 1825 are listed in entries for Matthew (Kelly) George (Kelly) & Eleanor (Sullivan) on this Website. On 8 9 1821 he is recorded as on stores with a wife & 2children. He is recorded in 1828 as constable at Cumberland St Sydney. He died in 1848 age about77 father of perhaps 4children. [Noted that Matthew George (Kelly) may have been a soldier with 73rd Regiment & killed in Ceylon after 1814] Eleanor/Ellen (Sullivan) was born about 1788. She was tried for forcibly detaining Catherine (Driscoll) in order that John (Sullivan a brother, cousin) could defile/marry her at Cork co. Ireland, sentenced to be hanged reprieved to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 2 7 1811 after a voyage of 7months on PROVIDENCE; she was Catholic. She is recorded in 1814 with 1child at Female Factory. She attempted in 1819 to have a child admitted to the Orphan system. She is recorded in 1828 as serving Life at Female Factory Parramatta.
