FAMILY: Richard Lovell’s wife Hannah Gray was a granddaughter of John Gray, per “Barwell” (1798), and Elizabeth Killett, per “Nile” (1801). Richard and Hannah Lovell had five children: Mary Rebecca (1847–1925) (see NSW BDM 3923/1847 V18473923 32A); Jane Hannah (1849–1933) (see 3134/1849 V18493134 35); Sarah Ann (1851–1942) (see Australia, Birth Index, 1788-1922, 1854: 8830 Reg No.Bp0675); Agnes Catherine (1853–…) (see NSW BDM 1324/1853 V18531324 52); and William Edward (1854–1941) (see Australia, Birth Index, 1788-1922, 1854: 8826 Reg No.Bp1112).


FULL NAME: Richard Edward Lovell BIRTH DATE: 18 August 1816 at West Twyford, and baptised 8 September 1816 at West Twyford (see London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1916). PARENTS: George and Ann Lovell. His father was a labourer. The family lived at Old Brentford (see London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1916). OCCUPATION: Cow boy (see New South Wales, Australia, Convict Indents, 1788-1842). OTHER: 1832, 16 April: On list of "Middlesex Prisoners on Orders", under sentence of transportation, Richard Lovell, aged 16 (see London, England, Newgate Calendar of Prisoners, 1785-1853 Piece 39: 1832). 1832-1834: On the prison hulk "Euryalus", moored at Chatham, prisoner #1597. Notation re "Character from gaoler" says the gaoler has "not known him before" (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849). 1834, 21 May: Transferred from the "Euryalus" to the "Roslin Castle" for transportation (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).

Offence: Theft > animal theft Verdict: Guilty; Guilty Punishment: Transportation RICHARD LOVELL and JAMES EVERETT were indicted for stealing, on the 28th of March , 1 live tame rabbit, price 7s.; 2 live tame fowls, price 5s.; 1 cap, value 6d., and 8 eggs, value 6d. , the property of Thomas Chamberlain . JOSEPH LEWIS (Policeman K 7.) On the 28th of March, about two o'clock in the morning, I heard a noise at the back of Providence-place, Bethnal-green - I got over a wall at the back of Chamberlain's house, and found a cap with eight eggs in it - I looked into the privy, and found the two prisoners there with a live tame rabbit and two fowls in a bag; I took them to the station - Chamberlain saw the property next morning, and claimed it. THOMAS CHAMBERLAIN . I live at No. 8, Providence-place - I know nothing of the prisoners. I lost this property from my premises on the 28th of March, and found them at the station-house, with this rabbit and fowls, which are mine - the cap belongs to the premises; the hen was setting on nine eggs. Lovell's Defence. I was at the play, and got over into these premises to sleep - I went into the privy; two men jumped over, we saw the eggs laying down, and put them into the cap. LOVELL - GUILTY. Aged 16. EVERETT - GUILTY. Aged 14. Transported for Seven Years. (James Everett arrived per 'Mangles 1832'). 20/11/1840: COF 13/9/1845 Married Hannah Gray in Brisbane and then moved to Ipswich - they had 4 children. 16/12/1848: Purchased land in Ipswich. These were two blocks of land side by side in Ellenborough Street. 15/04/1851: Richard was granted the publican’s licence for the Prince of Wales Hotel in East Street, Ipswich. 1 11/10/1851: The Prince of Wales was advertised to let. 24/2/1859: Richard died from “disease of the brain” with the duration of the illness as 3 days - Richard was listed as being a Carrier aged 40 years, born in England. He was buried on 25/02/1859 at Ipswich. 1/3/1859 The Northern Australian, Ipswich General Advertiser: DEATH. On the 24th ultimo, Richard Edward Lovell, carrier, of Ellenborough Street, aged 40 years, leaving a widow with four children, deeply regretted by all who knew him. His widow, Hannah Lovell died the following year of Atrophy, she was 29 years old. Both are buried in the Ipswich General Cemetery.
