Court and date of trial: Dorset Lent Assizes March 1839. Crime: Brookes: receiving stolen horses; Petty: horse stealing. Initial sentence: Brookes: 14 years transportation; Petty 15 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Characters not known. Brookes in prison before for smuggling. York. Petitioner(s): Swayne Bay and Floyte, Iron Acton Association, Bristol and G Symonds (opposed to mitigation); the convict William Petty; Mary Ann Brooks, wife; the convict and 54 inhabitants of Odcombe, Somerset; Charles B Henning on behalf of Petty; 67 inhabitants of Cheselborough. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Petty: could not have committed crime as he was fifty to sixty miles away; counsel declined to call his witnesses; principal against him was in gaol. Brookes (Brooks): dependent family; did not know horses were stolen.
