Convict Notes

At Northampton Assizes, …. Thomas Ashby, … for felony, to be transported seven years.- Cambridge Chronicle, 15 March 1822.

Thomas Ashby married Sarah Dunn when she was only 14 and pregnant with my GGgrandfather William Ashby. Sarah was the daughter of Gregory Blaxland and a reputedly beautiful Currency Lass & domestic servant of George Palmer , one Jane Dunn. ( her parents were ex convict farmers nearby at The Ponds They had 2 children -Gregory Dunn b1817 and Sarah b1820, whilst Gregory Blaxland was married to Elizabeth (Spurden) and continuing to have children by her. After Blaxland’s wife died he acknowledged Gregory and had him christened at age 14 with the Blaxland surname, was sent to a prestigious school for an education “befitting” a Blaxland and given substantial capital to set up a large grazing enterprise in Queensland, with a close relation,William Forster -(later premier of NSW). Unhappily for Gregory Snr, his son was killed by aborigines in retaliation for a massacre he conducted, and this is attributed to be one of the causes of his suicide. Thomas Ashby also suffered a premature death . Sarah had a large family and was destitute at a young age. Gregory Blaxland gave to her step father,(assigned convict for life, Francis Walker) via John Blaxland, 285 prime acres freehold comprising the site of the modern village of Luddenham. This was “carved out” of his 6.710 Luddenham estate.,all but this portion was mortgaged for L1000 and eventually forfeited However Francis Walker ( who had been induced to marry Jane to conceal the illegitimacy of Sarah’s birth at a politically critical time in 1820) instead gave the entire freehold to his own biological daughter via her husband, William Lawson ( no relation to the Blaxland Wentworth and Lawson person) thus defeating the Blaxland family’s intent of looking after their own- if illegitimate- bloodline. Sarah re-married , however another local landowner and had another substantial family by him in the immediate vicinity, although without the wealth the Lawsons enjoyed by virtue of that prime land.
