The convicts from the Chatham establishment, at St. Mary's, embarked from the dockyard on board the paddle-wheel steamer Adder, Mr. W. J. Blakely, and were in charge of a numerous party of convict guards and wardens, all heavily armed. Among the convicts shipped were a party of fifteen Fenians, who were engaged in the late conspiracy in Ireland, together with the officers and crew convicted of scuttling the ship Severn, and some others who have achieved notoriety from their crimes. The Fenian convicts, like the remainder of the prisoners, were chained together in gangs, but it was observed that they were kept apart from the other convicts in a portion of the vessel by themselves. The steamer Petrel also took down a number of convicts from the establishment at Millbank for shipment on board the Hougoumont, in charge of a strong escort and convict guard. On Tuesday, October 8th, the Hougoumont arrived in Portland roads. Shortly before midday ninety convicts were marched down to the Government pier at Portland under a strong escort of the 12th Light Infantry. The party included twenty-three Fenian convicts, among whom it was said, was Moriarty. The Government steamer employed in the breakwater service was used for conveying the convicts on board the Hougoumont transport ship. The convicts were chained together on embarking, and on board the steamer a strong guard of marines from her Majesty's ship St. George was formed, and saw the convicts safely placed on board the Hougoumont. The Governor of the penal settlement at Freemantle, Captain Young, is on board the Hougoumont, and returns in that ship to his sphere of duty after paying a visit to his native land." Thomas Jackson Towler was the son of Henry Towler b1799 in Weeting, Norfolk and Mary Ann, born C1799, Norfolk. Thomas/Judd was single, literate, protestant, 5’11 1/4" tall, dark brown hair, blue eyes, fresh complexion, stout, lost sight of left eye, scar near right elbow, mole right side of neck, scar left thumb. 13/1/1868: Free Pardon 25/1/1868:The Herald, Fremantle: WE have been informed of a case of grevious hardship. A man named Judd Towler, a convict by the Hougoumont, two days after his arrival was in formed that a free pardon had been granted him in consequence of his proved innocence. He has been turned adriftin the Colony with £2, and is told that that is all that can be done for him. He claims from the Government a return passage to England, to which he is legally and fairly entitled, and which has hitherto been granted to men under similar circumstances. We feel satisfied it is the duty of the Governor to provide the man with a passage, and to charge it to the Imperial Expenditure, and we are convinced it would be sanctioned and approved of by the Home Authorities. Both the Surgeon Superintendent, Dr. Smith, and Captain Cossens take a deep interest in the matter in which we are certain the public will fully sympathise. As Captain Cossens is shortly sailing for England, no time should, be lost in providing the passage, and should the Government refuse to do so they will be guilty of great injustice and gross dereliction of duty. 3/11/1886: Married Emily Cousins at Latham, WA. – 9 children listed: Minnie TOWLER Birth: (Date and Place unknown) Harry TOWLER Birth: (Date and Place unknown) Jack TOWLER Birth: (Date and Place unknown) Adeline TOWLER Birth: 1888, Bejoording, Toodyay, Western Australia George Thomas TOWLER Birth: 8 FEB 1890, Toodyay, WA. MUNDFORD.—On Wednesday, before the Rev. A. Sutton, and T. R. Buck worth and J. B. S. Bradfield, Esqs, when the case of alleged rape was called on, the Clerk suggested to the Bench that they should remand the case, the complainant, who is still very ill, not being present. Mr. Wilkin, for the accused, did not oppose a remand, but hoped the magistrates would admit his client to bail. Mr. Wilkin said Towler was ready to meet the charge anywhere and at any time.—Mr. Chittock objected to bail, but if the magistrates did grant bail he hoped it would be of a sufficient amount. It was subsequently agreed that the rehearing of the case should take place on the 18th of July; and the accused was admitted to bail, himself in £20, and one surety in £20.— Judd Towler, farmer, of Weeting (the accused in the alleged rape case), surrended to his bail on the charge of assaulting Mary Ann Docking, married woman, of Weeting by Brandon. The assault took place on the road from Brandon and Weeting, defendant being intoxicated at the time. He did not deny striking the complainant, but urged as the reason that she called him " a ______ rogue." The Bench fined him 40s. and £1 3s. costs, or to be committed for one calendar month's hard labour. ....Norfolk Chronicle - Saturday 23 June 1866

Judd Towler was charged with a rape upon the person of Mary Anne Moore, an inmate of the Union, on the 5th of June, at Weeting. Without going into any detail of the offence, it is enough to say that a most atrocious and cruel attack was made upon the young woman, who, it was proved, was liable to an attack of fits under the influence of which, though conscious of what was going on around her, she was deprived of all power of speech and of motion. Having first ineffectually tried to make her tipsy at a public-house into which he invited her to to go, the prisoner went on tho road with her, dragged her into a field, and in spite of her resistance (which of course ceased when the attack of fits came on her) effected his purpose, and while she was still senseless repeated the offence. So much injured and prostrated was she by the violence offered that on the first hearing of the charge before the Magistrates she was carried out of Court in a fainting skate, and for a month after the outrage was unable to leave the Union-house, or even walk. Mr. Metcalfe conducted the case for the prosecution, the prisoner being defended by Mr. S. Reeve. The prisoner was found Guilty with a recommendation to mercy, and sentenced to penal servitude for ten years......Norwich Post - Tuesday 14 August 1866

MUNDFORD. Serious Charge against a Farmer.— lt will be remembered that at a recent Petty Session at this place, Mr. Judd Towler, farmer, Weeting, appeared to answer a charge of having committed a rape upon the person of Anne Mary Moore, single woman, on the 5th of June. The prosecutor was unrepresented, but Mr. Wilkin, of Lynn, appeared for defendant. The Magistrates, how- ever, did not think the testimony sufficient, and therefore dismissed the summons. Whether rightly or wrongly, some individuals imagined that the alleged crime and its attendant concomitants had not received that degree of inquiry which they deserved, and, interesting themselves on behalf of the young woman, they engaged Mr. Chittock, of Norwich, to attend to the matter. Acting on that gentleman's advice, a fresh summons was applied for, and it came on for hearing on Wednesday last, when Mr. Chittock appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Willkin for the defendant. After a lengthened investigation (much of the evidence being, as before, wholly unfit for publication), the defendant was committed to take his trial at Norwich Assizes, bail being accepted for his appearance. .....Norwich Post - Tuesday 24 July 1866
