Date of birth not known. Christened 12/01/1806 at St Mary's Church, Coleorton, Leicestershire, England to William & Hannah Varnham. Parish Records.




John Varnham was listed as 20 years old on arrival. Place of Birth: Coleorton, Leicestershire. Per Rootsweb: Father: William Mother: Hannah Brothers: Thomas, Joseph Sister: Eliza. Attempted to escape before Trial. John was 5'2½" tall, dark brown hair, grey eyes, slightly pockpitted, SH inside left arm, short hands, single. 1830 Muster: Public Works. 22/5/1839: TOL 18/9/1840 Tasmanian Weekly Dispatch: Hobart Town Police Report. John Varnham, a ticket-of-leave constable, deprived of his indulgence, and dismissed the police, and ordered to the roads, for confining a female for drunkenness, who was perfectly sober at the time. 14/11/1842: Married Elizabeth Vickers (Navarino 1841) at Launceston, Tas. Marriage recorded as Vernon. Elizabeth died 29/6/1846, of General Debility, at Launceston. 24/4/1844: (Newspaper date) Recommended for a CP 28/12/1846: Married Harriet Madine/Nadine (Tasmania 1845) at Launceston. Harriet died 6/5/1898, of Senility, at Launceston. Children: 8/11/1847: William - m 15 Jun 1868 Christina Bowers/Bawer at Port Sorell, TAS, 2 children John and George. 19/5/1852 The Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston: John Varnham was charged with stealing a watch, the property of James Childs. The prisoner was found guilty, and recommended to the merciful consideration of the court. Sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labor. 4/11/1852: John - d 16 Dec 1852 of Convulsions, at Launceston, TAS. 2/8/1884: John Varnham died at Beaconsfield, Tas., of 'Stricture' - listed as a labourer, aged 84. Informant: William Varnham, his son.




Convicted together with his brother Joseph of horse stealing at Leicester assizes 28th March 1829 and both sentenced to death. John's sentence was commuted to transportation for providing information on other horse stealing gangs, but his brother was hung at Leicester 20th April that year.
