William BRIGGS was convicted at Cape Town, South Africa on 14 Aug 1843 for desertion from 45th Regiment of Army. 7yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Gilbert Henderson' arriving 12 Nov 1845. Aged 24yrs; soldier/tailer (had been in army for 3yrs, 3mths); 5'8 1/4". Native Place - Cavan, Ireland. 12mth Probation Period in VDL, at Impression Bay. 9 Jan 1849: Ticket of Leave granted. 17 Aug 1850: Free Certificate
