FOOTNOTE: NEWSPAPER report of his trial: "MURDER AND ROBBERY. Robert Gordon, a railway labourer, was accused of murder and robbery, in so far as, on the 31st December or lst January last, on the public road called the Peat Road or Duncryne Road, near the village of Gartocharn and at the farm house of Lochabor, occupied by Wm. Smith. in the parish of Kilmarnock, he did attack and assault William Guthrie, mason, then residing at Lochaber, and knock him down and kick or strike him with his fists on or near the belly, of which injuries he died on the 3rd January, two days after. As also of having robbed the said William Guthrie of a £1 note, several articles of wearing apparel, and a quantity of tools used by the said William Guthrie in his calling a mason... The jury returned a verdict of guilty but recommended him to mercy, on the ground that murder was not originally intended.
