He was tried at Monaghan county Ireland in Spring 1801, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1802 after a voyage of 7months on HERCULES. He was a baker in 1803. [Noted Smees records show a convict named William (Peate) from the ROYAL ADMIRAL as dying on 11 6 1795 father of 2children on Norfolk Island; the Norfolk Island references show his death as 19 6 1785.] Phoebe (???/Peat) arrived in NSW with her family on 30 5 1792 after a voyage of 4months on ROYAL ADMIRAL. She died on 8 12 1792 & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta. William (Peat) & Phoebe (???) produced 1child:] 1.William (Peat) was born on 2 11 1792 & baptised on 2 11 1792 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He died on 3 11 1792 age1d & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta. .. .. >>>Hannah (Mulle/ins) was tried for forgery of Will of Peter (Roach), on 26 4 1786, at Old Bailey, sentenced to death reprieved to Life, held at London Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict with her family on 22 1 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship LADY PENRHYN. She married fourthly Charles (Peat his second marriage) on 22 2 1788 at St Phillips CofE Sydney & produced 5children. She was Free by Servitude by 1797. She was granted her own 30acres which she farmed, notably during the absences of her husband. She became known with the names also Johanna, Susannah. She is recorded in May 1812 as intending to leave the colony with her her son William. She died on 14 4 1822 age63 mother of 6known children & was buried at Fort William Calcutta Bengal India. CCONVICTdone ..Charles (Peat-maybe brother? of William just above)-11th child of George (Peat) & Bridget (???) was born on 25 11 1759 probably at Grosvenor Square London. He married firstly Mary (Cannon) on 5 1 1779. He was tried for highway robbery & stealing money, on 27 10 1781, from Richard (Down) at probably Old Bailey on 5 12 1781, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery, sentenced to death commuted to Life on 10 10 1782 on condition of serving in Navy; he joined HMS PRINCE EDWARD on 12 10 1782 as a seaman. On 22 12 1782 he was transferred to BELLEISLE from which he deserted on 26 12 1782. In April 1783 he was committed to Newgate for transportation to Nova Scotia, then put on the hulks. On 7 7 1784 he was sentenced at Old Bailey to transportation to South Africa, held probably at London/Middlesex Gaol Delivery, but arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 1 1788 after a voyage of 12months on First Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH. He was assigned as overseer to convict gangs. In August 1789 he was assigned as 1of12 convicts on Night Watch (1st colony Police Force). He was issued his Conditional Pardon on 29 1 1792. In 1796 he was granted 90acres at Eastern Farms. He was Free by Servitude by 1797. On 12 10 1800 he became Able Seaman on HMS BUFFALO to England, from which he deserted at Portsmouth on 9 9 1801. However he must have returned as he is mentioned as possibly working on dockyards at Cockle Bay & working at sea along the eastern coast at least for the period 1805-1811. He apparantly travelled with his wife & son William about 1812 to India. In 1788 Mary Mullens from Ireland (born in 1785 daughter of Edward & Mrs Ann (Mullens)) arrived in the colony on LADY PENRHYN with her mother Ann (Mullens). On 31 8 1803 at St Johns Parratta a Mary (Peat) now age13 (it says) who came free as a child on LADY PENRHYN in 1788 married Lawrence (Brady) a convict from HERCULES in 1802. On 24 10 1784 Eliza the daughter of Lawrence (Brady) convict from HERCULES & Mary (Mullens) came free on LADY PENRHYN was born & baptised at St Philips Sydney on 31 3 1805. Charles (Peat), who would have been carer for the infant Ann (Mullens), has an entry on this Website.

Old Bailey: HANNAH otherwise HANNAH MULLENS, Deception > fraud, 26th April 1786. Offence: Deception > fraud Verdict: Guilty > with recommendation Punishment: Death HANNAH otherwise HANNAH MULLENS , was indicted, for that she, well knowing that one Peter Roach had served our Lord the King, as a seaman, on board the Burford, and that certain wages and pay were due to him for such service, on the 11th of November last, she did appear in her proper person before the Worshipful George Harris, and did produce and exhibit a certain paper, partly printed, and partly written, with a certain mark thereunto set, which purported to be the last will and testament of the said Peter Roach and did then and there unlawfully, wilfully, and knowingly, take a false oath that that paper did contain the last will and testament of him the said Peter Roach ; and that she was the executrix therein named, with intent to obtain probate, in order to receive the wages and pay so due to him the said Peter Roach, for and on account of his said service, against the statute. A second count, for that she, supposing certain wages and pay was due, &c. *The trial continues at length and may be read in full on the Old Bailey website.* Hannah stated that she was born in Ireland and was the daughter of Jack Mullens and was nearly twenty-six. At sixteen she went to London and lived with a seaman, Peter Roach, for about six months. 1784: went to live with Edward Mullins, a porter, they had a daughter Mary, born in 1785. 11/11/1785: Hannah was illiterate, she attempted to secure probate of a document that she swore was he last will of Peter Roach, who had been killed in an explosion at Madras, India in April, 1783. The document was obviously forged and she was brought to trial at the Old Bailey. Found guilty of forgery she was sentenced to death. For nearly a year she was in a the condemned cell with her child. She embarked on the ‘Lady Penrhyn’ with her child Mary. 22/2/1788: Hannah married Charles Peat (Scarborough 1788) They had 5 children: 1789 Charles 6/12/1791 Nancy 8/2/1794 George 3/9/1797 Elizabeth – she only lived a few weeks 12/1/1799 William. 1801: Hannah had 30 acres in her own name – she farmed this while Charles was absent. 12/10/1800: Charles signed on as an able seaman, aged 40 on the ‘Buffalo’ for England. He ran from the Buffalo at Portsmouth on 9/9/1801. 1802: Hannah Peat was living with her 4 children on a 30 acre lease, 26 acres of which were under wheat and maize, she and 1 goat. May 1812: Mrs Susannah Peat was intending to leave the colony with Charles Peat and William Peat, a youth. It is assumed that they went to India. Burial records for Charles and Hannah Peat were found in Bengal, India Charles Peat is recorded as having been buried on 1 June, 1813 at Fort William. The death of ‘Mrs Johanna Peat (relict of the late Mr Charles Peat)’ was dated 14 April, 1822 at Chandernagore. Both localities are within the bounds Calcutta.
