Convict Notes

Middlesex Session, Tuesday. Mary Perfect and Jane Gilderoy were indicted charged with hating stolen a shoal of the value of 22s., the property of John Shields. It appeared that the prisoners went into the shop of the prosecutor, a linendraper in Whitechapel, where they had asked to be shown some riband ; after looking at a variety for a long time, they declined to purchase, and said they wanted to see some shawls. These they examined, but could not at first meet with one that suited. At length, when they were looking at some lace, they agreed to buy one of the shawls for 335., and left 2s. 6d. as part payment, with a promise to call and pay the balance on the following Monday. As they were about to quit the shop, the foreman requested them to walk up- stain, and, as they were doing so, the prisoner Perfect was seen to drop the shawl, for stealing which, the two were now upon their trial. It was furthermore proved that the prisoner Gilderoy was observed to take the shawl and hand it to her companion. The Jury, without hesitation, returned a verdict of Guilty. The Learned Judge said, it was impossible to allow Gilderoy to remain in this country. She was sentenced to seven years' transportation, and Perfect to six months' imprisonment with hard labour.
