Note: From his descendants' family records, the following key dates are provided: Birth: 1815 at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Marriage: 15 May 1845 to Susan Culliford (1823-1910), at the Wesleyan Mission House, Hobart Town (see also https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-4p248j2k). The couple had 8 children. Death: 16 February 1859 at Maribyrnong, Victoria. Burial: 17 February 1859 at Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton North, Melbourne (see also Australia and New Zealand, Find A Grave Index, 1800s-Current).
1833: On arrival in VDL, he was listed as single. His Conduct Record says he was transported for "assault with intent to ravish" - the word "rape", although used in the court, was not on other official documents relating to him after his conviction for "assault with intent to rape". The 1833 Muster says he was assigned to public works (see New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849). 1835: Muster - transported to Port Arthur (see New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849). 1836, 8 November: His Conduct Record states that he was "highly disorderly and most insolent" in his conduct towards the overseer (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-37$init=CON31-1-37p144). 1837, 7 August: For insubordination, he was sentenced to an extra 6 months on his original sentence, as well as 25 lashes. 1838: He received a Ticket of Leave (see Hobart Town Courier, 18 May 1838, p2, Tickets of Leave). 1839: John Runcie received his Certificate of Freedom (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-37$init=CON31-1-37p144).
1833: Precognition against John Runcie for the crime of rape, or assault with intent to commit rape at Brora, Clyne, Sutherlandshire. Accused: John Runcie, son of James Runcie, sailor and Margaret Robb, Age: 12, servant to John Mackenzie, confectioner and hardware merchant, Berrylane, Gallowgate, Aberdeen, Address: 5 Princes Street, Aberdeen. Victim: Jean Mason, daughter of John Mason, Helmsdale (see National Records of Scotland; Reference AD14/32/138). --0-- Trial papers relating to John Runcie for the crime of rape, or assault with intent to commit rape at Brora, Clyne, Sutherlandshire. Tried at High Court, Inverness. Accused: John Runcie, son of James Runcie, sailor and Margaret Robb, Verdict: Guilty, Sentence: Transportation - 7 years. Note: Pleaded not guilty to rape but guilty of intent to commit rape (see National Records of Scotland; Reference JC26/1832/127). --00-- 1833, 7 February: John Runcie was sent from Inverness and received aboard the Justitia prison hulk, at Woolwich, where he was listed as 15 years old.
