Convict Notes
John Rutland (1811 – 1890) and Ann Thompson (1808 – 1880) John was born in Guist on 28th August 1811 and baptized on 15th September 1811 in St Andrews Church, Guist. (Appendix 1) John’s parents were William Wade and Ann Wade. John’s older siblings were Margaret and James. John Rutland married Ann Thompson in Fakenham on 27th May 1831. Ann was born in Pensthorpe around October 1808 and died in Guist in July 1880. Ann was buried at Guist church on 25th July 1880. Together they had seven children – three boys and four girls. The 1841 census gives John’s occupation as Brickmaker and the family lived at Little Moore. John was committed for trial on 11th November 1844 by James Gray, charged on the oath of Daniel Dix, a farmer of Twyford, that on Sunday 10th November John set fire to a barley stack in Guist which was the property of Daniel Dix. (As in the UK, Prison Commission Records, 1770 – 1951) The trial took place on 17th December 1844 in Norwich at the Winter Assizes where John was found guilty and sentenced to transportation to Australia for 15 years. John never returned home.

Apologies I put ag labourer, but at the time of transport John was a Brickmker per newspaper articles regarding the crime. He had two marriages in Tasmania, 1852 Sarah Ann Hilton, and 1888, Letitia Mcshnolty who had a child Elizbeth Jane Rutland, born and died 1890: the year JR died as well
