John Shearer was transported on the Marion, departing 7th Jun 1845 and arriving 16th Sep 1845 with 299 passengers.
Built 1834 at Calcutta. Wood ship of 684 Tons. The 1847/48 voyage sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) BUT also went on to Port Phillip Bay, Victoria where 300 exiles disembarked. (The newspaper source says they were from Millbank, Pentonville & Parkhurst prisons.)

Convict Notes
During the 1830s and 1840s in Edinburgh, the theft of brass door handles and bell-pulls was fairly common in the Georgian New Town area. In February 1845, the accused John Shearer, Alexander Sommerville, Andrew Brown and Charles Craig were convicted at the High Court of Justiciary for 11 such thefts. Whereas John Shearer received 7 years' transportation, Sommerville received 12 months imprisonment; and both Brown and Craig received 6 months imprisonment - see Scotsman newspaper 26 February 1845 p 3 on 'High Court of Justiciary.
