Convict Notes
John Stow, of the Oriental Queen, was sentenced for 7yrs, at Suffolk 23 Oct 1849 - for housebreaking (receiving stolen groceries). He departed Plymouth 23 Oct 1852, arriving van Diemens Land 19 Feb 1853. He was single, C of E religion and could read & write. Farm labourer, 5'1", 23yrs old. He was assigned out and has a clear record with good behaviour. He received his Ticket of Leave 22 Nov 1853 and Conditional Pardon 19 Dec 1854. (These records can be looked at on www.archives.tas.gov.au Convicts records. Con. 33/1/114 page 242. His Convict no. was 68039. There does not appear to be a John Stow on the Pioneer Index, but there is a John Stowe who married a Mary Horner in 1875 (he was aged 43) which could be the same person? Not related, but interested in convicts in Tasmania.
