Convict Notes

Morning Chronicle London, England 11 Aug 1828: HOME CIRCUIT.—MAIDSTONE, AUG. 8 HORSE-STEALING, JOHN SWANN, aged 30, was indicted for having, in the beginning of May last, stolen a black gelding, the property of William Partis. It appeared that Mr. Partis had seen the horse tied up in the stable at ten o'clock at night, and in the morning he was missing. On that day the prisoner was seen by a toll-gate-keeper, at about 20 miles distance from the premises of Mr. Partis, riding on this horse. Two persons, to whom the prisoner offered the horse for sale, had some suspicion that the prisoner had stolen him, and insisted on his giving an account of the way in which he came by him, and at first gave an account which one of the witnesses knew could not be true, and he said so to the prisoner, who then dismounted and ran away, but he was pursued and secured, and then he said that he had been sent by Mr. Partis to sell the horse at a neighbouring fair. Mr. Partis was sent for, and identified the horse, but he had never given the prisoner any authority to take or to sell him.___Guilty. John Swann was listed as 32 years old on arrival. Native Place: Kent. John could read, was married with 6 children, 5'10¼" tall, dark ruddy pockpitted complexion, brown hair, dark hazel eyes. Assigned to B. L Derrietta, Camden. 30/6/1838: John Swann died at Port Macquarie, NSW.
