Built 1845 at London. Wood ship of 780 Tons. The owner was Thomas Colyer of Kent, the son-in-law of Joseph Somes. Two voyages with transport convicts to Australia: 1845/1846: 1847: 248 male people (known as "exiles" landed at Point Henry, Geelong, Victoria and 1 went on to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Queen Victoria had decreed that all of these men (many of them youths from Parkhurst, Isle of Wight) should be treated as "free" upon arrival (significant backlash to transported criminals at this time).

John TACEY was convicted at Bolton, Lancaster, England on 23 Oct 1845 for stealing a till containing money. Previous convictions. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship "Joseph Somes" arriving 20 May 1847. Aged 18 yrs; single man; labourer; Protestant; can read & write a little; 4'10 1/2" height; fair complexion, frecked; lt brown hair; Hazel eyes; burn mark on back. Native place of birth: Bolton, England (ref. as recorded on Convict record, VDL) Mother: Fanny Brother: James TACEY (already transported to VDL on a 7 yr sentence) Brother: William, at native place Colony of VDL: 18 mths Probation Period Assigned to work duties. Several notes of misconduct and punishments. 26 Dec 1854: Ticket of Leave granted 29 Oct 1856: Certificate of Freedom issued, at New Town, nr Hobart.
