Joseph Gladding was transported on the Surrey Or Surry, departing 31st Dec 1813 and arriving 28th Jul 1814 with 204 passengers.
Built at Harwich in 1811 a square-rigged transport ship of 443 tons and copper lined she had two decks with a height between decks of 5 ft. 8 ins. In 1818, she had a major refit increasing the decks (and convict carrying capacity) to three. She was owned by the London firm of F. & C.F. Mangles.

Convict Notes
Wednesday at the General Sessions of the Peace for this Borough, John Ranson and Joseph Gladding were indicted for stealing two butter firkins, the property of Mr. Carpenter, of this town, cheesemonger. Ranson was found guilty, and Gladding was acquitted. The said John Ranson was afterwards indicted for stealing a quantity of ... pipe, of which he was found guilty, and ordered to be transported for 7 years. Joseph Cladding, Jonathan Garrard, John Deaves, and James Hayward were indicted for breaking open the hatchway of the ship Dolphin, and stealing from thence a quantity of beef, the property of Simon Allen, master of the said vessel; when Gladding, Garrard, and Deaves were found guilty, and were sentenced to 7 years transportation: Hayward was acquitted. Secretary’s Office, Sydney, 10 Sep 1814 The contagious and malignant disease which prevailed on board the Male convict ship Surry on her late passage hither from England, having been fatal to thirty-six of the convicts destined for this place, His Excellency the Governor deems it expedient that the names of the unfortunate sufferers shall be published in order that their friends shall be officially apprised of their Decease. List of thirty-six convicts, who died at sea, on board the ship Surry, on their voyage from England to New South Wales with the names of the Hulks from whence they have been embarked, and the dates on which they died. Commitments —On Tuesday last, the following persons were committed to our Borough Gaol, .... —viz. Richard Clarke, (on his own confession) tor having stolen, on the 27th of of July last 150lbs. of beef, the property of Mr. Simon Allen, of St. Mary Stoke, in this town. —Jonathan Garrod, Joseph Gladding, and John Deayes, were also committed on suspicion of being concerned in the same offence. —Jonathan Garrod was also charged with having stolen, the of July last, a pair shoes, and cotton handkerchief, the property of Ansel Ansel in St. Matthew’s, in this town; and Joseph Gladding was also charged with having stolen, the of July last, two half-firkins butter, the property of Mr. William Carpenter, of St. Mary at the Key, in this town. —At the same time, John Ranson, was committed for having stolen, on the 1st of June last, 40lbs. of lead, the property of Messrs. Studd, Halliday and Acton, in the same parish; and was also charged with being connected with Gladding, in stealing the butter belonging to Mr Carpenter. Suffolk Chronicle, 8 Aug 1812. At the Sessions held for this Borough Wednesday last, John Ranson, and Joseph Gladding, being severally indicted for grand larceny, pleaded not guilty—John Ranson was found guilty, and Joseph Gladding was acquitted. The said John Hanson being indicted for grand larceny, on second indictment, pleaded not guilty—-he was found guilty, and ordered to transported for the term of seven years, to such place beyond the seas, ...
