This entry looks as though it has been mis-transcribed at some point, and should read Thomas Wright. ----------------------------------------- National Archives. Hulk Records. HO-9-8_3. Page 35. Portsmouth Harbour, Leviathan, Captivity and Portland hulks. Received from Middlesex, 1 Aug 1814. Thomas Wright (1), age 48, Felony, Tried 6 July 1814, at Middlesex, 7 years, To NSW, 13 Sep 1814. Thomas Wright (2), age 59, Felony, Tried 6 July 1814, at Middlesex, 7 years, FP 21 Nov 1818. ----------------------------------------- There were two men named Thomas Wright, tried at the Old Bailey on the same date, sent to the same hulk together, but only one was transported. The second man, 10 years older , remained on the hulk until he finally received a pardon. -------------------------------------------------- Tried at the Old Bailey, 6 July 1814. 671. THOMASÂ WRIGHTÂ was indicted for feloniously stealing, on the 1st of June , twenty-two pounds weight of lead pipe, value 5 s. the property of William Jones , affixed to his dwelling-house . THOMAS COLES . I am a stone mason, No. 2, Portland-road, Marybone. On the 1st of June, I came out of Holborn, crossed Bloomsbury-square, into Great Russell-street . I saw a man standing on an iron grate, letting himself down into the area. When I came farther on I saw the prisoner stand on the area rails with the lead in his arms. I said to him, halloo, what are you doing there; he threw the lead down directly, and jumped on to the pavement. This was about half past two, on the 1st of June, in the morning. He endeavoured to get away. I seized him in Bloomsbury-square, by the iron rails. The watchman came up; we took him to the watchhouse. The watchman and I took the lead out of the area, and took it to the watchhouse. MR. DORRINGTON. I am a watchman. I heard the cry of watch between two and three o'clock on the 1st of June. I took the prisoner into custody, and assisted Mr. Coles in taking the lead to the watchhouse. JOHN ROBERTS . When the lead was taken to Marlborough-street office I assisted in taking it to Mr. Jones's house to see whether it corresponded; it did. Prisoner's Defence. I ran away from Mr. Coles, he had a stick; I thought he would strike me. GUILTY , aged 48. Transported for Seven Years . Second Middlesex jury, before Mr. Recorder.
